<p>A beautiful Gothic minster, racecourse, thriving high street, markets and excellent restaurants make Beverley in East Yorkshire an attractive town to live in. It may be close to Hull’s sprawling suburbs, but it’s a world apart and, to the north, lies York, just 27 miles away. A commuter’s dream, it has regular train services to both its city neighbours as well as direct links to London and the coast. To the west of the town centre lies a stretch of common land called Westwood and to the east is Beverley Beck, a canal that leads from the River Hull. Today, desirable housing lines its banks, wildlife is flourishing and colourful narrow boats are often moored to the quays.</p>

<p>Beverley is beloved amongst foodies for its overflowing number of excellent restaurants, gastropubs, cafes and markets in such a small town. For starters, the <a href="https://www.pipeandglass.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pipe and Glass</a> is East Yorkshire’s only Michelin Star restaurant, but without the heady prices at James and Kate Mackenzie’s charming 15<sup>th</sup> century inn in pretty Dalton with overnight garden rooms. Others to make the haloed Michelin Guide pages include <a href="https://www.thewestwood.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Westwood Restaurant</a> in the former Grade II listed courthouse and <a href="https://www.whitesrestaurant.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Whites Restaurant and Patisserie</a> beside the city walls. <p>You can’t hide money and the opulence of Beverley is reflected in the high-end jewellery, fashion, interior, gift and art stores lining the cobbled streets and squares. Perhaps make a beeline for <a href="https://k-spirits.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kindred Spirits</a> with its taste before you buy British craft gins, vodkas and liqueurs or have fun browsing Beverley Antiques &amp; Collectors Centre in the maze-like St Crispin Arcade. </p>

Don’t miss the vibrant Saturday and Wednesday markets, where else but in the squares with the same names, with stalls of local produce, international street food, arts and crafts, while Beverley’s <a href="https://www.beverleyfestivalofchristmas.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Festival of Christmas</a> is the most magical time to stock up on those stocking fillers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-amp-wellbeing">HEALTH &amp; WELLBEING</h2>



<p>No excuse not to raise your heart rate, gyms with yoga and body blast include <a href="https://www.anytimefitness.co.uk/gyms/uk-0292/beverley-yorkshire-and-the-humber-hu17-0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Anytime Fitness</a> and 24/7 <a href="https://www.thegymgroup.com/find-a-gym/beverley-gyms/beverley/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Gym Group Beverley</a>. Both sporty and sociable, <a href="https://www.eastridingleisure.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">East Riding Leisure</a> has an exhausting number of activities from adult and infant pools, a skate park, indoor and outdoor gym, Clip n Climb, exercise classes, short tennis, soft play to a café, as well as all-inclusive clubs from netball to Fitmums &amp; Friends. <a href="https://beverleygolfclub.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beverley &amp; East Riding Golf Club</a> is the oldest inland club in Yorkshire, while <a href="https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/beverleyeastridingltc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beverley &amp; East Riding LTC</a> has seven all-weather artificial grass courts and lots of social tennis (Muddy’s kind of thing). Plenty of running, walking and cycling, too, in the surrounding parks, countryside and coast.</p>



<p>North Beverley Medical Centre and East Riding Community Hospital provide on-the-doorstep care while there are larger facilities in nearby Hull, with private treatment at <a href="https://www.spirehealthcare.com/spire-hull-and-east-riding-hospital/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital</a>. No shortage of in-town GPs, opticians and dentists, as well as herbalists, physiotherapists and chiropractors.</p>

<p>For such a long-standing community, it’s hardly surprising that the history of this beautiful town has seeped into the core of its residents, keen to preserve as well as share the peace and majesty of their neighbourhoods. Each September, volunteers help to open doors to historic buildings and gardens around Beverley for the Heritage Open Days, giving a behind-the-scenes glimpse to secret nooks and crannies. The <a href="http://www.syntanbarge.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beverley Barge Preservation Society</a> owns and cares for historic Syntan, moored on Beverley Beck, which now acts as a museum, heritage centre and community resource for meetings and parties. <a href="https://beverleyminster.org.uk/heritage-craft-workshops/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Heritage Craft Workshops</a> from stone carving to cushion printing are held at the Minster where a <a href="https://beverleyminster.org.uk/community-connections-project/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Community Connections Project</a> helps to bring all sorts of people together with a shared purpose.</p>



<p>There has been a <a href="https://www.beverleyfolk.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Folk Festival</a> in Beverley each year since 1983, while the award-winning, biannual <a href="https://www.beverleypuppetfestival.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beverley Puppet Festival</a> delights children and adults alike. Perhaps surprisingly, the annual <a href="https://www.beverleyginfestival.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gin Festival</a> takes place in the iconic Minster with delicious street food and live music – cheers!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nearby-attractions">NEARBY ATTRACTIONS</h2>

<p>The iconic medieval <a href="https://beverleyminster.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Minster</a>, of course, is a must-see and a guided tour follows not just the footsteps of princes, pilgrims and priests to discover what brought thousands of worshippers to this church from 700AD, but up 113 steps under the roof timbers for incredible views. There are free tours available at pre-allotted times for the Tower or Priest Rooms of even older <a href="https://www.stmarysbeverley.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">St Mary’s Church</a> at the opposite end of town, as well as the Commonwealth War Graves in the cemetery.</p>



<p>Walking one of the town’s trails could lead you to the dark side on the <a href="https://www.visiteastyorkshire.co.uk/listing/beastly-beverley-north-trail/129589101/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beastly Beverley</a> path or try to spot 40 unique sculptures or the 22 full-sized paintings by local artists Fred and Mary Elwell, which are dotted throughout the streets. Dogs and owners will enjoy stretching legs along the <a href="https://www.visiteastyorkshire.co.uk/listing/beverley-beck/129986101/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beck</a> or on <a href="https://www.visiteastyorkshire.co.uk/listing/beverley-westwood/130300101/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beverley Westwood</a> pastures, though beware of the free-roaming cows! It’s where <a href="https://beverley-racecourse.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beverley Racecourse</a> has been in situ for over 300 years, remaining a sure bet for glamorous and adrenaline-fuelled dasy out between April and September. Also, there is plenty more to explore in former UK City of Culture, Hull, the Yorkshire Wolds and along the East Yorkshire coast.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-culture">CULTURE</h2>



<p>A fantastic line-up of music, drama and comedy are all delivered by <a href="https://www.eastridingtheatre.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">East Riding Theatre</a> in a converted Baptist chapel in Beverley’s town centre. For film lovers, Parkway Cinema in Flemingate shows all the latest releases as well as opera, ballet, concerts and theatre from around the world. The art gallery in the <a href="https://www.eastridingmuseums.co.uk/find-a-museum/?entry=treasure_museum_gallery" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">East Riding Treasure House</a> is where to find exhibitions and museum collections in four gallery spaces, as well as a top floor circular viewing platform from where you can take in breathtaking panoramas of the town’s other priceless gems – the Minster, St Mary’s and the surrounding countryside.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-average-house-prices">AVERAGE HOUSE PRICES</h2>



<p>Much of the town’s architecture is elegantly medieval, with numerous examples of timber-framed structures as well as Georgian and Victorian properties, although the Beck is now lined with 21<sup>st</sup> century housing. The average house price in Beverley is £277,171 and the majority of sales are terraced properties, at around £230,618. Detached properties sell for an average of £403,197, with semi-detached houses fetching £242,498.</p>

<p>Of the seven schools in Beverley, six are state schools. <p>Both rated ‘Outstanding’, <a href="https://www.beverleyhigh.net/">Beverley High School</a> is a five-form entry girls’ comprehensive, while <a href="https://www.beverleygrammar.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beverley Grammar School</a> for boys is the oldest state school in England, described as inclusive, friendly and welcoming with high expectations. <a href="https://www.actdancesing.co.uk/stagecoach-theatre-arts/stagecoach-beverley-2a2?s" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stagecoach Beverley</a> is a theatre school where every child participates in all three performing arts – drama, dance and singing. Early stages are for children aged 4 – 6 and the main school is for 6 – 18-year-olds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-best-kept-secret">BEST-KEPT SECRET</h2>



<p>On one side of a stone archway inside St Mary’s Church, there is a familiar looking carving of an upright rabbit or hare holding a messenger bag, long suspected of being the inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s White Rabbit in <em>Alice in Wonderland</em>. Although the author spent time in the Beverley area with his family when visiting his grandfather as a child, there isn’t any concrete evidence in his journals that he ever saw this figure.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-commute">COMMUTE</h2>



<p>The train station lies to the east of the town centre and offers regular non-stop services to London Kings Cross in just over 3hrs as well as Hull (15 mins), York (1hr 15mins), Bridlington (30 mins) and Scarborough (1hr 15 mins). As the bus station is to the north, there is a walk between and buses run to the nearest cities, seaside resorts and surrounding towns and villages. The A63/ M62 leads to Hull city centre or the M180 crosses the Humber Bridge. The nearest airport is Humberside, taking just 30 mins to reach by car, bus or taxi.</p>
