It&#8217;s 23° in Holmfirth today, so not better choice for me than this juicy and bright Pet Nat (pétillant naturel &#8211; wine made via méthode ancestrale) from Alex Tristram and Sam Bunker of Worthing&#8217;s Titch Hill Wines.



Made from a field blend (mix) of Schönburger, Bacchus, Pinot Noir, Reichensteiner, Rondo, Regent, and Seyval Blanc, this light red, minimal intervention and zero-sulfer addition wine really is a crowd pleaser of a bottle; apple, strawberry, rose and a hint of pepper, with a low abv of 10% and the high of tiny little bubbles of fruity joy.&nbsp;



A great choice to take to a BBQ or picnic with friends, but really I just want the whole bottle to myself.

In 1991, Will Davenport planted five acres of vines in the Kentish village of Horsmonden, and in doing so marked the beginning of Davenport Vineyards &#8211; a venture built on a deep respect for the land, a commitment to sustainability, and a clear vision for producing high-quality English wines.



This is a complex, fragrant and balanced blend of Bacchus, Ortega, Faber, Siegerrebe and Huxelrebe grapes, producing a dry white wine with a wonderful lightness and delicacy, soft texture and smooth creamy structure &#8211; a surefire hit for for the diehard Sauvignon squad and a mainstay at Fanny&#8217;s &amp; in the O&#8217;Brien&#8217;s bar, for good reason &#8211;&nbsp; Davenport vineyards helped in no small part to pave the way for low intervention English winemaking, and to that end we&#8217;ll always place these wines high up on our altar.

Lucie Swiestowska and Jules Phillips are a young husband and wife team who in 2019 planted over 16,000 Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Bacchus and Pinot Gris vines across 10 acres just outside the village of Hamstreet in Kent &#8211; the heart of a real hot spot for English wine.&nbsp;



Making small batch natural wines using only their own grapes, they craft each vintage with minimal additions and interventions in the winery, meaning their wines are never replicated, or standardised year upon year &#8211; for the purists amongst us, this is a true representation of terroir.



&#8216;Carbonnay&#8217; is a Chardonnay pressed and matured for 10 months in terracotta amphora, resulting in a vibrant light orange wine, which has notes of bright citrus, blossom and green olive brine all rounded off with a smoky, peaty character &#8211; one for the foodies, and a perfect pairing for a summer lunchtime salad or that early evening cheese &amp; charcuterie board.

I&#8217;m not going to lie &#8211; the last great English red I had was actually Gusbourne&#8217;s Pinot Noir 2022, enjoyed over an exceptional birthday meal at Norman&#8217;s Restaurant in Kirkburton. Sadly, with one bottle left in my cellar and seemingly no others online, it&#8217;s almost pointless to recommend it here (though you can sign up in advance for their next release). &nbsp;



Instead, I&#8217;m going to recommend their Pinot Meunier &#8211; a soft, fruit-driven wine, laden with flavours of red cherries and ripe blueberries alongside a subtle florality. Elegant, with smooth tannins, it won a silver award at the IWC in 2024, and for good reason &#8211; I may still be yearning for their Pinot until 2028, but this quaffable offering is a great placeholder until then.

Matt&#8217;s wines are renowned for their uniquely subtle, savoury and aromatic notes and Balance Beers for their wild ferment ales &#8211; both with a commitment to small batch production and sustainability.&nbsp;



This Wine-Beer hybrid is the friendly handshake between English wine &amp; beer lovers; a tannic and effervescent number, with cranberry, cherry and leather on the nose, alongside hedgerow fruits, cinnamon and woodsmoke on the palate&#8230; I love it, and I&#8217;m sure you will, too.
