<p>Yorkshire is on a roll. Hot on the heels (or should that be stomachs) of the <a href="https://yorkshire.muddystilettos.co.uk/things-to-do/latest-news/top-100-restaurants-yorkshire/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SquareMeal top 100 restaurants</a>, in which 11 of the county’s restaurants were flagged, it’s time to glory in the news that we’re punching above our weight when it comes to Britain’s finest gastropubs, too.</p>



<p>Estrella Damm&#8217;s <a href="https://www.top50gastropubs.com/">Top 50 Gastropub</a>&nbsp;shortlist&nbsp;<em>really</em>&nbsp;matters in the foodie&nbsp;world, as it celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit of the great British pub serving fabulous grub. This year the top spot was once again taken by Woodbridge’s <a href="https://theunrulypig.co.uk/">The Unruly Pig</a> in Suffolk (should win for the name alone!), with London Soho’s <a href="https://www.devonshiresoho.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Devonshire</a> in close second place. But guess what? Yorkshire made the top three!</p>

<p>This picture-postcard historic inn with thatched roof and a Michelin Star has held a place on the Top 50 list since it launched in 2009, deservedly winning the top spot more than once. Chef patron Andrew Pern is a local celeb, having owned this pub with rooms for more than 20 years, as well as other thriving Yorkshire bistros such as <a href="https://www.starinnthecity.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Star Inn the City, York</a> and former Star Inn the Harbour at Whitby.</p>

<p>With a long history of good food and drink, this 15th-century inn with panoramic views of the Yorkshire Dales is sometimes called Britain’s first gastropub, and chef Michael Wignall achieved a Michelin Star within a year of taking the reins  in 2018. It has been lovingly renovated and expanded with luxe rooms and has won five AA Rosettes – the first in Yorkshire. Tempted? I’ll whisper this only once – get 25% off ‘stay and dine’ and ‘gourmet getaway’ breaks until the end of March 2025.</p>

<p>Once a corn and spinning mill, this 17th-century building became a country pub in 1890. Today it offers old-fashioned hospitality with open fires, low beamed ceilings and a cosy bar alongside 11 boutique rooms. The award-winning two AA Rosette menu features seasonal dishes using local ingredients and produce from their own kitchen garden. <p>Former <em>Great British Menu</em> winner chef Tommy Banks is becoming legendary around these parts with his most recently opened historic Grade-II listed pub and restaurant quickly establishing a culinary reputation. It’s the sister pub to the Michelin-starred and 4AA Rosette <a href="https://www.blackswanoldstead.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Black Swan at Oldstead</a>, and close to the family farm, where much of the fresh produce hails from. No wonder the Abbey Inn clinched the extra accolade as Estrella Damm&#8217;s most Sustainable Pub of the Year. His third venue turning heads and tempting taste-buds is <a href="https://rootsyork.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Roots York</a>, which appeared alongside The Abbey Inn on the recent top 100 restaurants SquareMeal list.</p>

<p>One of the largest, but also finest, gastropubs on the list, this Michelin-starred former coaching inn is lovingly run by James and Kate Mackenzie. No measly portions here – expect local game, fresh seafood and Barnsley chops the size of your gluttonous appetite. Of course you can just have a sandwich and a pint (make sure it’s the Two Chefs ale on draft), but then that would be to miss out on a memorable culinary experience. After all, boutique rooms are available to sleep it all off in the garden rooms at the pub itself or the old lambing yard nearby.</p>

<p>This traditional village pub with flagstone floors, exposed beams, oak panelling and roaring fires has been around for 300 years and owned by the Ibbotson family since 1999. That’s plenty of time to get comfortable with providing the warmest of welcomes, and generous helpings of the freshest seafood and locally sourced meats. On-site accommodation includes a row of converted farm cottages including one with a spa pool where you can steam as you lap up the views. </p>
