<p><br>Lightwater Valley, eh? If you remember it from the eighties and nineties (and yes, the TV advert is still living rent-free in our heads), then this is a very different beast. But don’t worry. Gone are the bone-rattling, white-knuckle roller coasters and in their place is a brilliantly family-focused park that hits the spot for younger kids without boring the grown-ups senseless. This leafy, lakeside setting gets the thrills just right.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-lowdown">THE LOWDOWN</h3>

<p>The park really leans into letting kids feel independent (without actually letting them loose) and we love that. There’s loads of “drive yourself” rides, including safari jeeps, vintage cars and trains, all run on tracks, so little ones get the thrill of control while you to keep your blood pressure down.</p>



<p>But if you’ve accidentally bred some mini thrill-seekers, there’s plenty to graduate to. The pirate ship rides bring some drama, while the caterpillar and ladybird coasters give that all-important big ride feeling without tipping into terror territory. My two (6 and 8) were completely sold on these.</p>



<p>It’s not just for the kids. The new-for-2026 Spinning Racer delivered two genuinely wobbly-legged moments (we’re talking proper scream-out-loud stuff (happy screams, mostly). And you will get absolutely drenched at Splash Falls but the queue height is a bit of a mental hurdle. Plan accordingly unless you’re happy embracing damp trousers for the remainder of the day.</p>

<p>If energy levels dip, there’s loads to fall back on. There are plenty of outdoor play areas, a solid soft play (ideal for a coffee break) and shows and character appearances that give everyone a chance to sit down for five minutes. Jurassic Adventure Golf was a standout for us, proper quality and a big hit.</p>



<p>Food-wise, it’s a pleasant surprise. Our fish and chips were cooked to order, genuinely tasty and didn’t feel like a daylight robbery. There were plenty of well-priced coffee stops dotted around too. If you’re bringing your own supplies, there are great undercover picnic areas, so you can dine in whatever style you’re used to.</p>



<p>And then there’s the setting itself. Far from a concrete-heavy theme park, this is all trees, lakes and space, which gives it a relaxed, almost countryside feel. And it’s big enough to fill a full day but compact enough that you’re not carrying tired kids for miles by mid-afternoon.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-verdict">THE VERDICT</h3>



<p>This was a genuinely lovely surprise. Lightwater Valley has reinvented itself as a smart, family-first park that still delivers the fun but without total overwhelm. Even our resident adult theme park sceptic left asking when we could come back, which, frankly, says it all.</p>
