Monk Park Farm, Thirsk

Monk Park Farm, Thirsk, a surprisingly expansive day out

At first glance, Monk Park Farm feels fairly low-key, but don’t let that fool you. Once you’re inside, it opens up into a surprisingly expansive, activity-packed day out. Tucked away in the countryside near Thirsk, it blends a genuine working farm feel with enough added attractions to keep kids entertained for hours.

Animals are very much the stars of the show here. From cuddly piglets (an instant hit) to goats eager for a snack, there’s plenty of hands-on interaction throughout the day. Timed activities add to the fun too, with the daily pig race at 1pm drawing plenty of excitement and a cleverly designed guinea pig feeding game, using fishing rods and lettuce, proving unexpectedly addictive.

Away from the animal pens, there’s no shortage of ways to let off steam. Expect barrel rides that have clearly stood the test of time, a small train for gentler laps of the park, and a mix of climbing frames, play areas and a roleplay village scattered across the site. The giant air pillows are always a crowd-pleaser, while 42 Wallaby Way offers something a bit different with the chance to stroll among wallabies. There’s also a woodland walk if you fancy slowing things down.

Food options are easy-going and family-friendly, with a central area offering plenty of choice. You might aim for something sensible but chances are the ice cream will be the main event. Staff are consistently warm and approachable, helping the whole place run smoothly without losing its relaxed, unfussy feel.

With regular events, including themed takeovers and the lively MonkFest in August, it’s somewhere that rewards repeat visits. Unpolished in the best possible way, Monk Park Farm delivers fresh air, full-on fun and the kind of day out that ends with very tired children and a quiet journey home.
