This is small hotel life done the Yorkshire way, all wooden panelling, crackling fireplaces and a friendly bar. Tucked just outside the village of Hawes, Stone House Hotel feels like you’ve wandered into the plot of a particularly charming novel. Books effortlessly left about waiting staff who overshare in exactly the right, gossipy way. It’s confident in its quality, which means you can float down to dinner in your slippers or dress to the nines and no one will raise an eyebrow.

Each of the 24 rooms is different, with pleasantly firm beds, more pillows than you strictly need and classic furniture offset with the most modern perks.

Bathrooms go big on roomy showers and unfussy, contemporary fittings. This is not one of those places where “heritage” means wrestling with ancient plumbing. Draw the curtains back and you’re rewarded with the kind of soft, green Dales views that do more for your wellbeing than any meditation app.

Food is where Stone House quietly shows off. Dinners are as smart as you want them to be. Beautifully plated dishes, swirls of sauce, neat rectangular puddings but still properly satisfying. The wine list is well chosen and the staff know it inside out.

Outside, the grounds are modest but the landscape is anything but. You’re surrounded by the Yorkshire Dales, so the main activity is simply watching the sun slide down behind the hills while birdsong (and, in season, the bleating of lambs) provides the soundtrack. When you do feel the need to stretch your legs, Hawes is a mile away along quiet lanes, the Wensleydale Creamery is on the doorstep for essential cheese sampling and Hardraw Falls – England’s largest single‑drop waterfall – is just a short hop in the car or a slightly longer ramble. There are guided walks and tours to book if you like a bit of structure, but honestly, no one would blame you for doing very little beyond reading by the fire, working your way through the wine list and remembering what properly switching off feels like.
