<p>A real slice of cinematic history in West Yorkshire, the <a href="https://elland.nm-cinemas.co.uk/elland/now/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rex</a> is one of the oldest purpose-built, structurally unaltered cinemas in the country. Built in 1912, it was set up by a board of local businessmen and, with the advent of TV, became a bingo house, then back to a cinema again. Go on a Saturday evening and you’ll be treated to a live organist before the film and during the interval &#8211; often complete with sparkly waistcoat. Worth the ticket price for a real journey back in time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A celebrated Leeds landmark, <a href="https://hpph.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hyde Park Picture House</a> is the only gas-lit cinema in the country, possibly even the world. Imagine Paul Mescal by gaslight. Now &#8211; you’re back in the room. You can watch all the big-name movies here, as well as some arty, obscure movies. For the Hamnet showing they even had a sensory herbal tea-tasting session, using herbs featured in the film. Now that’s what we call immersive cinema.</p>

<p>The town of Hebden Bridge has taken cinematic matters into its own hands and its independent, not-for-profit single-screen <a href="https://hebdenbridgepicturehouse.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cinema</a> is owned and operated by Hebden Royd Town Council, with a team of volunteer film-lovers at the helm of the programming. This means you can expect all manner of weird and wonderful movies, as well as an annual film festival and special Oscar-Winners Week.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a lovely Art Deco building overlooking the station, Sheffield’s independent <a href="https://showroomcinema.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cinema</a>, funded by the British Film Institute, is more than just a cinema, it’s an arts centre and BFI Film Academy and lead organisation for Film Hub North. With everything from celebrations of David Bowie specials to Awards Season specials and you know you’re in the safe hands of real film-lovers.&nbsp;</p>

<p><a href="https://wetherbyfilmtheatre.savoysystems.co.uk/WetherbyFilmTheatre.dll/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wetherby Cinema</a> opened in 1915 and, like many others, has existed under a range of names and operated as a bingo hall. With special screenings &#8211; including operas and ballets &#8211; and membership options, it’s a great place (did we mention licenced bar?) to enjoy this year’s hits with a glass of Prosecco and a reclining armchair.&nbsp;</p>
