<p>All fired up from watching Channel 4&#8217;s <em>The Great Pottery Throw Down</em>? We are, and now that the final is over (spoiler alert – James Stanley Watson from Belfast won), we need new clay dates in the diary! The good news is that Yorkshire has loads of pottery, craft and print fairs, with talks, demos and workshops. Here is our pick of the best, starting this weekend.</p>

<p>Guest judge on <em>Throw Down</em>, Sharon Griffin, did a great job in Episode 7 and here is the chance to meet the artist in person at Stand 31, where she will be exhibiting many of her figures. Watch her fast and energetic demo, too, on Sunday morning (16 March). You may recognise another star of the show, Yorkshire potter Jonathan Jolly, wandering around the fair and rumour has it he’s not averse to a selfie (if you ask nicely).</p>



<p>York Museum Trust has kindly offered all visitors half-price entry to <a href="https://www.yorkartgallery.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">York Art Gallery</a> over the weekend – just show your YCF ticket. Open from 10am – 5pm, it houses the world’s most extensive collection of 20th-century British studio ceramics with more than 5,000 pieces.</p>

This is brilliant place to buy affordable art and explore all things print, with more than 60 artists, printmakers and galleries from across the UK under one roof. Artists, textile designers and illustrators exhibit works for sale in a variety of mediums from screen print, etching, monoprint, giclee, risograph, litograph, collagraph, linocut, letterpress and other print media. The vibrant weekend also features family activities, street food and discounted exhibition entry (from £2.50 fair only, free for members and under 18s).</p>

<p>If your inner Hepworth is calling, this festival in the heart of York may be the chance you&#8217;ve been waiting for! It hosts a variety of demonstrations and craft workshops for budding crafters and ceramic artists of all ages, while a craft show alongside shows some of the best arts and crafts from around the county.</p>



<p>Try your hand at blacksmithing, felt making, stained glass workshops, floristry or willow weaving. Natasha Jackson will offer families the opportunity to throw a pot and paint ceramics, just as she does in her <a href="https://www.natashajacksonceramics.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">studio</a> in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, and you can take your masterpiece home afterwards. Pride of place on the mantelpiece for that pot!</p>

<p>This one-day sculpture course is led by the very talented Mary Sewell from <a href="https://www.portlandworks.co.uk/portfolio/mary-sewell-artist/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Portland Works</a> in Sheffield, home to around 30 craftspeople. She makes ceramic sculptures influenced by prehistoric figurines that have been discovered around the world. The course is at the <a href="https://sculpturelounge.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sculpture Lounge</a> in Holmbridge, which is full of creative artists and well worth a visit in its own right. As a South-East North Potter Association event, priority will be given to SENPA members.</p>

<p>The Dovecot is giving the 280-year-old Poplars Farm building in Styrrup a new lease of life with the launch of the gallery and sculpture studios of Hilary Cartmel and Michael Johnson, which host regular exhibitions. More than 30 of the area’s best potters and ceramic artists will be displaying and selling their wares, as well as giving demonstrations. There is also a free, supervised ‘have a go throw’, as well as refreshments and a garden to sit in and enjoy.</p>



<p>If you can’t wait till summer, then join in a series of two-hour, artist-led free workshops during March. Funded by the government with materials provided, choose from block printing with Janet Gilbert (10.30am – 12.30pm) or weaving with Sue Hogg on 15 March (2 – 4pm); printmaking with Hilary Cartmel and Jo Thorpe on 16 March; slow stitching with Bobbie Hillman on 23 March or two-colour Lino-printing with Kate Taylor on 29 March. <p>Hosting around 70 stalls, this is a fun event to browse works by a wide variety of ceramic artists and potters, including homeware, sculpture or jewellery. A ‘fringe’ show held in the chantry chapel just a short walk from the main exhibition is also worth checking out. The weekend includes family activities, street food and discounted entry fees (free for members and under 18s).</p>

<p>A great day out for all the family (including dogs on leads), this annual event held in Sheffield Botanical Gardens is probably the largest outdoor art market in the North of England. It’s a wonderful opportunity to buy the perfect piece of art or craft direct from the artist, while enjoying the stunning surroundings of the gardens.</p>



<p>With premier products in the pavilions and marquees, sculptures on the lawns, an open art competition, Sheffield Young Artists Display, a dedicated ‘home and gardens’ area and locally sourced food and drink refreshments, this is a great day out. Tickets go on sale in early summer.</p>

<p>This large, two-day celebration of all things ceramic is held in the Kelham Island Industrial Museum, a cool urban space where traditional meets contemporary and which is free to explore. The show attracts around 50 ceramic artists and potters from around the UK, with exquisite works for sale including homeware, vases, bowls and ornaments.</p>



<p>Visitors are offered the chance of winning a prize by voting for their favourite stall and there is a popular potters meal, where exhibitors can socialise together. For refreshments including craft beer and real ale, head to The Millowners Arms, a friendly pub in the yard. Tickets cost £5 and are available on the door, under 16s are free and National Pottery Association members receive a 20% discount.</p>
