<p>As Whitby is the spine-chilling setting for Bram Stoker’s horror <em>Dracula</em>, it’s no wonder this quiet seaside town by day is renowned for its ghostly apparitions by night. It’d take a lot more than simply stamina to climb the 199 steps alone to the ruins after dark as spooky St Hilda, the Abbey’s former founder, may just be watching you from an upstairs window. Even more terrifying, the cries of poor nun Constance de Beverley may be heard plaintively pleading to escape from her entombment after she was bricked up within the walls as punishment for breaking her chastity vows. Headless horses, one-armed figures, a hound from Hell, dastardly pirates and skeletons of sailors are all said to prowl the cobblestone streets. Problem is, it’s hard to tell what’s real or not during the annual <a href="https://whitbypavilion.co.uk/event/tomorrows-ghosts-festival-weekend-ticket/">Ghost</a> and <a href="https://www.whitbygothweekend.co.uk/">Goth</a> weekend which you’re just in time for, as well as <a href="https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/whats-on/whitby-abbey-illuminated-24-oct-2-nov-24/">Illuminated Whitby Abbey</a> until 2 Nov.</p>

<p>This popular National Trust property has the dubious reputation of being the most haunted house in York and we’re well aware of how many spooks lurk around the city’s walls and ancient monuments. The fact that a whole Roman battalion is said to be seen roaming through its cellar walls could explain the head (or should that be headless?) count. After all, with a history spanning 2000 years, there are bound to be a few extra unexpected guests from time to time and you may spot a number of spooky additions around the grounds including translucent 3D sculptures in a unique trail set up by York BID until 5<strong> </strong>Nov.</p>

<p>The ghost that has taken up residence in this stately home is said to be Katherine (Anne), one of the daughters of Sir Henry Griffith who built the Hall. The story goes that she couldn’t wait to move into the new home but when it was almost finished, she was attacked and robbed by ruffians who left her so badly hurt that she passed away a few days later from her injuries. As she lay dying, she told her sisters that her skull was to be preserved in the Hall, but instead her body was buried in the churchyard. Her ghost caused such a commotion that the sisters had the grave re-opened and brought her skull into the property where it is said to have remained since 1620, hidden within the ancient walls so that she can have her dying wish to be part of the family home.</p>

<p>This creepy historic National Trust property is said to be haunted by the Grey Lady who was bricked up in the bedroom now named after her while still alive by her husband who returned home from the Civil War to discover she’d been having an affair. Now she roams the corridors, still seeking her lost lover who was also killed by the master of the house during the jealous and vengeful rage. Her spirit is claimed to have been caught on camera by paranormal investigator Mark Vernon in 2016 who couldn’t shake the spectre as she followed him around the building. <p>A top tourist destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site founded by 13 Benedictine monks in 1132 also lays claim to being one of Britain’s most spooked properties. Perhaps it’s no surprise as abbots William Thirsk and his friend Adam de Sedbergh were executed for plotting against King Henry by refusing the oath of supremacy in 1536. The 900-year-old ruins are rumoured to be home to a host of spiritual apparitions, including a choir heard chanting in the Chapel of Nine Altars, while the daughter of Stephen Proctor, who built nearby Fountains Hall in the late 16<sup>th</sup> Century, is also said to roam the corridors.</p>

<p>Dating back to 1154 and one of the only surviving examples of an Augustinian monastery in the UK, Bolton Priory is now picturesque ruin near stepping stones crossing the River Wharfe. By day, it may seem an idyllic family walk and picnic spot, but at night, the Black Canon is said to lurk in the shadows, dressed in a dark cassock and cloak. Legend has it that this is the spirit of a monk who passed away just before the dissolution of the monasteries and has never been able to Rest In Peace since. The Parish Church of the same name survives to this day and welcomes visitors – if you dare.</p>
