The Norse snow goddess Skadi has clearly been busy, dusting&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://jorvikvikingfestival.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JORVIK Viking Centre</a></strong>&nbsp;with a blizzard of icy charm. But don’t worry . . . while it might look like Viking-age Coppergate has been hit by a deep freeze, the 10th-century locals are promising you the warmest of welcomes. <p>Take a break in your Christmas shopping and come in from the chilly streets of York to experience what life was like over 1000 years ago in the very same spot. Just like the city itself, the Vikings are getting festive too, decking their timber homes with natural decorations and preparing for Yule in true Norse style. A Winter Adventure&nbsp;has transformed this world-famous attraction into a snow-dusted slice of Viking life providing the perfect stop after a wander through York’s twinkling Christmas markets.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-2-it-s-a-feast-for-the-senses">2. It&#8217;s a feast for the senses</h2>



<p>JORVIK is known for its realistic representation of Viking life (smells and all) meaning you’ll get a fully immersive experience. From real life Vikings (well, kinda) to objects you can get your hands on, you really will feel as though you’ve stepped back in time. As you glide through the frosty streets of Viking-age York, expect snow-tipped rooftops, mist rolling off the river and plenty of atmospheric blue light.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-3-there-s-a-fancy-new-attraction">3. There&#8217;s a fancy new attraction</h2>



<p>New for this year is the brand-new&nbsp;Time Portal&nbsp;that lets you peek into the blacksmith’s house excavated on the site in the 1970s. If you take a look down, you’ll see the actual excavations beneath a glass floor under your feet (pretty cool, huh?). There’s some seriously impressive graphics and a few surprises that’ll have the whole family gasping, but you’ll find no spoilers here! It’s storytelling at its finest, which is pretty fitting considering that was a huge part of Viking culture.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-4-explore-the-gallery">4. Explore the gallery</h2>



<p>JORVIK was born after the excavations uncovered during ‘The York Dig’ where over 40,000 Viking artefacts were discovered on that very sight! Many of them are now housed in the gallery which you can explore at your leisure after the ride. There’s a whole trove of treasures to uncover, from full Viking skeletons, ice skates made from bone (telling us the Vikings like a spot of ice skating up the River Ouse), and even Viking poo! The last one isn’t quite our cup of tea, but little ones will love it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Located in the gallery, you’ll find a Viking hard at work making ‘penningar’ – Viking coins – which you can buy and take home for yourself. As he’s working away, he’ll tell you that it’s actually ‘penningar’ where we get the word penny from. If you ask him for some change, don’t be surprised if he starts smashing the coin apart – cutting it up like that was how Vikings got their change. Pretty neat, huh? As your ticket gives you a whole year’s access to the attraction, it gives you the perfect excuse to spend some of that penningar in the gift shop. We have our eye on the Viking-themed Christmas jumpers.&nbsp;</p>
