<p>Nicknamed the ‘Daffodil Dale’, Farndale&#8217;s sea of yellow is really something special. We have the good old medieval monks at nearby Rievaulx Abbey to thank for planting the first daffodil bulbs and now these cheerful blooms are protected within the Farndale Nature Reserve (so don’t go picking them)! It’s easy walk, just follow the path alongside the rippling River Dove from Low Mill to Church Houses and back (under four miles). There is an alternative return that climbs through farm fields for some elevated dale views. Plus for a little bribery (if required), you can’t miss the dog and child-friendly <a href="https://www.facebook.com/daffycaffy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Daffy Caffy</a> for a well-earned cake and cuppa.</p>

<p>For sun, sea and spring daffs, Scarborough&#8217;s glowing display of daffodils are legendary. It&#8217;s an area loved by William Wordsworth, marrying his childhood sweetheart Mary at Brompton-by-Sawdon’s All Saints’ Church. Now, in romantic recognition, Lobularis, the variety of daffodils which inspired the poet’s famous <em>I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud</em>, have been planted in the churchyard. <p>We wait with bated breath to see the magnificent restored and transformed interior of Castle Howard when it reopens on 18 April. But until then, there is equal enthusiasm for the daffodil displays brightening up the gardens. Stroll around the lake and grand ornamental sculptures (there&#8217;s a Statue Trail guide to download) or cycle on the network of bridleways and lanes in the Howardian Hills. <p>Although the House doesn’t re-open until 5 April, it’s the perfect time to explore the parkland and its banks of daffs. There are so many walks and trails to choose from in over 330 acres and new this year are the adventurous 5K Trail, taking around an hour to complete, and the historic What Was Here Trail with an app to download for a narrated guide. Our favourites include the Lakeside, East Park, Woodland and Little Explorers Trail (all great for daffy sightings), while the interactive Parkland Waymarker Trail with its rubbings and spy holes or Wildlife Sculpture Trail double as fun treasure trails. No doubt you’ll be nagged to stop off at the Stables Café for cake. There are &#8216;Cobwebs and Cream Teas&#8217; behind-the-scenes tours, too, as well as Craft Fairs on 30 Mar and 27 Apr.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-thorp-perrow-bedale"><a href="https://www.thorpperrow.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Thorp Perrow</a>, Bedale</h2>



<p>Widely regarded as the most important Arboretum in the North of England, these fabulous gardens are the creation of one man – Colonel Sir Leonard Ropner, whose family continues to cherish and protect this Yorkshire Dales gem to this day. Covering 100 acres, it is currently home to five National Plant Collections and 51 Champion Trees, but in springtime, come to admire one of the finest and most extensive displays of naturalised daffodils in the country, including some old and unusual varieties. Whilst here, don’t miss the Easter Trail, Bird of Prey &amp; Mammal Centre (including fluffy chicks and meerkat pups in spring), Homes &amp; Garden Shop, children’s play area. Dogs are welcome on a lead.</p>

<p>The first bulbs in York were planted in 1949 when youth organisations donated 18,000 bulbs to the city. Now the yellow blooms continue to make residents and visitors alike feel youthful with scores of the trumpeted flowers dancing around the city walls, riverbanks and Museum Gardens all the way to Clifford’s Tower. Why not climb to the rooftops of Clifford Tower or York Minster for the best aerial views?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rhs-harlow-carr-harrogate"><a href="https://www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/harlow-carr/whats-on/spring-garden-weekend" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RHS Harlow Carr</a>, Harrogate</h2>



<p>You can’t fail to be impressed by the ocean of daffodils at RHS Harlow Carr as 22,000 bulbs form a glowing golden mile on approach. Within the garden, you’ll be uplifted by the scent and shades of yellow from more than 70,000 daffodils across 70 different Narcissus species. The best spots? Along the Woodland edge, around the Queen Mother’s Lake, in the Kitchen Garden and Alpine House. Plus if you mosey along during the <a href="https://www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/harlow-carr/whats-on/spring-garden-weekend" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Spring Garden Weekend</a> from 28 – 30 Mar, you can get tips on growing and displaying them too with expert talks, family workshops, garden tours and floristry classes.</p>
