<p>This interactive, educational wonderland isn’t called the National Children’s Museum for nothing. It’s a fun-packed family day out in the dry for kids aged 0-11 yrs and a place where they’ll be learning about the world around them (without even knowing). The only damp squib is that visits must be booked in advance, so check the weather forecast first! On the bright side, when you pay once, you can play for a whole year. Explore six zones, extensive grounds, creativity space and more for a unique visit for younger children.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s the American dream – in Skipton! This much-loved Yorkshire institution (ahem, there&#8217;s one in Lancashire, too) is known for its delicious ice cream. When the rain falls (as it does a lot in the Dales), head for this Fifties American diner for fluffy pancake stacks. Grown ups can live out their Rydale High fantasies, send the kids to the indoor play areas. It’s both a blast and a gas with home cookin’ thrown in. Limited Play-only Playbarn booking slots are available, while on weekends and holidays, best reserve your table. Have a nice day!</p>

<p>This is one of my favourite go-to’s with young children in tow when the weather goes off the rails. Whether you’re a train geek or not, this place is a hit with all ages, featuring locomotives from the legendary Mallard to the 100-year-old Flying Scotsman. Why not try out the new VR experience or step aboard the only Japanese bullet train that’s not in Japan? Hands-on challenges at the Wonderlab, wondrous diminutive model railways and a play area for under-6s means, so you don’t have to mind the age gap! And it’s FREE entry, too.</p>

<p>Don’t be stumped by the damp, don a hard hat and go underground. Stump Cross Caverns is a magical experience where you can self-guide the family through the brightly illuminated caves with stalactites and stalagmites in all sorts of weird and wonderful shapes. There is a 10,000 year old Cavewoman who may surprise you – and we definitely want to know her anti-ageing tips. She&#8217;s very friendly and will make your visit memorable – as will a sausage roll and hot chocolate in the café. Undoubtedly a hidden gem and rock-solid, rainy day option.</p>

<p>Discover your inner explorer at Tropical World at Roundhay Park in Leeds where the drizzle will soon evaporate as children take an unforgettable and steamy adventure through rainforest, mangroves and desert. Meet animals and insects like meerkats, monkeys, crocodiles and butterflies the size of dinner plates, while learning how to help with conservation in simple ways such as planting wildflowers for bees and birds. Tickets aren’t as deadly as some of the resident reptiles either – £8.40 for adults, £4.20 for kids (3-15 yrs), under 3s free.</p>

<p>Unwrap the history of chocolate in York’s sweet interactive museum which follows the trail of the cocoa bean back 4,000 years. The tour is both informative and delicious as you get to taste samples along the way which helps to keep all members of the family engrossed (especially me). Look forward to the end when you get to make your own choccies to take home – if they last that long. To sweeten the cost of a tour, you save 10% when pre-booked online, family of four discounts are also available, while under 4s are free and a further consolation is eating your own body weight in chocolate (well, almost).</p>

At the indoor Playhive, find soft play areas, slides, roundabouts, seesaws and swings as well as a space age UFO zone, so tots will be over the moon! In festive season, there is a cool covered skating rink for ages 4+, where kids can keep their balance with the help of friendly penguin skate aids and if it does dry up between the showers, there is an Enchanted Forest and Snowflake Maze to get lost in or meet Santa and his missus in the grotto. The best part is that as all equipment is designed for all sizes, adults don’t miss out on the fun!</p>

But if your child doesn’t like jumping right in, that’s fine, too, as Peaceful Play sessions are also included along with soft play areas for under 5s.</p>

<p>Over 900 years old, one of the best-preserved castles in the kingdom of Yorkshire and beyond welcomes visitors to explore every historic nook and cranny from dungeons and banquet halls to watch towers and even the privy. &nbsp;A recently discovered well explains how the castle survived medieval sieges, while a new tearoom may help you to withstand the downpours. When it brightens, follow in locals’ footsteps to secret Skipton Woods for the best views below the castle cliffs, where deer, kingfishers and woodpeckers can be found. Open every day except 23-25 Dec, dogs on leads can also enter.</p>
