<p>Tucked into the postcard-pretty village of Hetton in the Yorkshire Dales,&nbsp;<strong><a href="https://angelhetton.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>The Angel at Hetton</strong></a></strong>&nbsp;is housed in a 15th-century inn and widely regarded as the original British gastropub (yes, before it was cool). Long beloved by locals and food pilgrims alike, things levelled up in 2018 when chef-patron&nbsp;<strong>Michael Wignall</strong>&nbsp;and his wife Johanna took the reins, bringing with them a quietly brilliant Japanese influence that now runs through everything – without losing the pub’s soul (it shouldn&#8217;t work, but it really does).</p>

<p>The result? A Michelin star in 2019 (held ever since), five AA Rosettes, and a cabinet creaking with awards including Best Restaurant with Rooms in England (twice, for 22/23 and 23/24). With tasting menus from breakfast to dinner and 16 beautifully calm ensuite bedrooms upstairs, this is very much a destination restaurant – but one that still feels properly Yorkshire at heart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>

<p>Forget hushed tones and nervous whispering. Despite the star, The Angel remains refreshingly down-to-earth. Fires crackle in the bar, staff greet you like they actually mean it, and the Scandi-leaning interiors (all pale woods and soft neutrals) are deliberately understated so the food can hog the limelight. Which it absolutely does.</p>

<p>The open-plan dining room is cleverly zoned, so it never feels cavernous. Insider tip: bag a table near the far fire for peak cosiness and top-tier people-watching. Acoustics are spot-on too – no echoing clatter, just a low, happy hum. And keep an eye out for the living walls dotted around the space (one even grows mushrooms – of course it does).</p>



<p>Service deserves a special mention. Polished, warm and properly knowledgeable, without a sniff of theatre. They’ll happily talk you through every dish, tweak things to suit your preferences and generally make you feel like this whole Michelin thing was designed with you specifically in mind.</p>

<p>Let’s be honest, this is why you’re here. And it’s glorious. Menus are tasting-only, but with smart flexibility. You can go all-in on the 10-course dinner (12 if you’re feeling extra), opt for the five-course version, pop in for Sunday lunch, or try the excellent Taste of the Season lunch midweek. Michelin, but make it accessible.</p>

<p>Thoughtful touches abound: personalised menus sealed with red wax, handwritten name tags, and genuinely impressive handling of dietary requirements (mine were not only accommodated but beautifully integrated – and printed on my own take-home menu, which now lives on the fridge like a trophy).</p>

<p>Wignall’s cooking is Japanese-inspired but very much his own. Expect exquisite ‘snacks’ to kick things off, a silky chawanmushi that sets the umami dial to 11, and then… eel with white chocolate. Yes, really. No, you won’t question it once you’ve tasted it.</p>

<p>There’s bread (because there must be), but the Hokkaido milk bread is so light you barely notice it’s there – dangerous, frankly. Highlights are many, but the lobster tartlet is a thing of beauty, and the banana parfait with toasted peanut ice cream is the sort of dessert you’ll still be thinking about weeks later. Petit fours follow, because restraint is overrated. (Luckily, I too have a separate pudding stomach.)</p>



<p>Crucially, you leave feeling satisfied rather than defeated – a rare skill with tasting menus.</p>

<p>Breakfast the next morning is equally joyful: a five-course affair featuring Nidderdale sausage, home-cured bacon, locally-roasted coffee and a hen’s egg served on hay. Playful, delicious and very on brand.</p>



<p>If you’re staying over (or have a saintly designated driver), the drinks pairing is a must. Curated by sommelier Lauren (£125pp, and sharable between two), it’s thoughtful, surprising and refreshingly un-snobby. Best moment? When asked for alternatives, she gently reminded me the best pairing is the one you actually enjoy drinking. That pretty much sums The Angel up.</p>

<p>With 16 ensuite rooms and suites, staying over is a no-brainer. Interiors echo the restaurant’s Scandi calm – natural textures, soft lighting, and zero fuss. But don’t mistake minimal for basic: expect Nespresso machines, Dyson hairdryers, cloud-level beds with crisp monogrammed linens and bathrooms worth lingering in.</p>

<p>The freestanding bath is a showstopper, especially when paired with Chapter Organics products and mood lighting dialled just right. Turndown service includes fluffy robes, and yes, there’s Michelin-star room service in the form of a carefully crafted charcuterie board and a special bottle of wine delivered to your door. There’s also a freshly baked cookie on arrival and a fully stocked minibar, because they really don’t want you going hungry.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-family-friendly">FAMILY FRIENDLY</h2>



<p>Surprisingly, yes. There’s even a children’s tasting menu – a rarity at this level, and a lovely touch for foodie families.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accessibility">ACCESSIBILITY </h2>



<p>Ground-floor rooms are available, parking is right next to the inn, and staff are proactive about offering assistance. Nice detail: there’s a little torch on your keyring so you can safely wander back across the courtyard after dark.</p>

<p>Two dog-friendly rooms (one studio, one suite) and a dedicated dining area – just flag it with reservations.</p>

<p>You’re deep in the Yorkshire Dales here, so walking boots are encouraged. Rooms come with beautifully illustrated walking maps for all abilities, plus a handy local guide at breakfast. Staff are fountains of local knowledge too – just ask.</p>

<p><strong>Good for</strong>: Serious food lovers who want world-class cooking without the stiffness, plus anyone who appreciates thoughtful service and a proper sense of place.</p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong> Those in a rush – this is a meal (and a stay) to linger over. </p>



<p><strong>THE DAMAGE</strong>: Take your pick: Taste of the Season lunch is £80pp, the five-course tasting lunch or dinner £120pp, Sunday lunch £85pp; 10-course tasting dinner £170pp; Gourmet Getaway from £680 per night (includes overnight stay, 10-course tasting menu and breakfast).
