<p>We don&#8217;t mean to brag &#8211; well maybe a little &#8211; but we&#8217;re getting rather used to Yorkshire&#8217;s growing reputation for top-notch cuisine. And when it comes to gastropubs, Yorkshire is well and truly reaching for those (Michelin) stars as well.</p>



<p>Estrella Damm&#8217;s <a href="https://www.top50gastropubs.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Top 50 Gastropub</a>&nbsp;is one of the big hitters in the foodie&nbsp;calendar, celebrating pubs that combine proper hospitality with seriously good cooking (and a health dose of entrepreneurial flair). This year, London Soho’s <a href="https://www.devonshiresoho.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Devonshire</a> took the top spot after narrowly missing out last time round &#8211; but Yorkshire more than held its own, with two pubs landing in the top top six and six making the Top 50 overall. We&#8217;ll say it: that&#8217;s impressive. </p>



<p>Extra points go to <a href="https://generaltarletonferrensby.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Great Tarleton</a>, recently snapped up by Tommy Banks, which was named <em>One to Watch.</em> A lovingly restored old roadhouse now serving up confidently elevated pub grub? Yes please &#8211; and very much one to keep on your radar.</p>

<p>This picture-postcard historic inn with thatched roof and a Michelin Star has held a place on the Top 50 list since it launched in 2009, deservedly winning the top spot more than once. Chef patron Andrew Pern is a local celeb, having owned this pub with rooms for more than 20 years, as well as other thriving Yorkshire bistros such as <a href="https://www.starinnthecity.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Star Inn the City, York</a> and former <a href="https://www.starinntheharbour.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Star Inn the Harbour at Whitby</a>.</p>

<p>With a long history of good food and drink, this 15th-century inn with panoramic views of the Yorkshire Dales is often whispered about as Britain’s first gastropub, and when chef Michael Wignall took over in 2018, he promptly picked up a Michelin Star within a year. Fast forward and it&#8217;s now fully glowed-up with luxe rooms and a frankly outrageous five AA Rosettes (the first in Yorkshire, no less). Tempted? <p>Former <em>Great British Menu</em> winner chef Tommy Banks is fast becoming something of a local legend and his most recently opened historic Grade-II listed pub and restaurant in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors is only adding to that reputation. It’s the sister pub to the Michelin-starred and 4AA Rosette <a href="https://www.blackswanoldstead.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Black Swan at Oldstead</a>, and sits close to the family farm that supplies much of the kitchen’s produce — which probably explains why it picked up&nbsp;<strong>Estrella Damm’s Sustainable Pub of the Year</strong>&nbsp;last year.&nbsp;Banks’ third venue, the Michelin-starred&nbsp;<a href="https://rootsyork.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Roots York</a>, which appeared alongside The Abbey Inn on the recent top 100 restaurants SquareMeal list. No surprises there. </p>

<p>Small but mighty,&nbsp;this old boozer&nbsp;has had quite the comeback. Reopened less than a year ago under new owners Sam Pullan and Nicole Deighton (also behind <a href="https://www.empirecafeleeds.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Empire Cafe</a>), it promptly topped the&nbsp;<strong>Good Food Guide</strong>’s&nbsp;<em>100 Best Pubs in Britain</em>&nbsp;list — not bad going. The menu nods to pubs of all stripes, with bar snacks that have become the stuff of legend: half-pints of shell-on prawns, sausage rolls baked to order with homemade brown sauce, and ham carved off the joint, warmed by the fire and stuffed into butter-brushed rolls with a dedicated mustard menu. Pub food but done with real intent. </p>

<p>One of the largest, but also finest, gastropubs on the list, this Michelin-starred former coaching inn is lovingly run by James and Kate Mackenzie. No measly portions here – expect local game, fresh seafood and Barnsley chops the size of your gluttonous appetite. Of course you can just have a sandwich and a pint (make sure it’s the Two Chefs ale on draft), but then that would be to miss out on a memorable culinary experience. After all, boutique rooms are available to sleep it all off in the garden rooms at the pub itself or the old lambing yard nearby.</p>

<p>Once a corn and spinning mill, this 17th-century building became a country pub in 1890. Today it offers old-fashioned hospitality with open fires, low-beamed ceilings and a properly cosy bar with 11 boutique rooms. The award-winning two AA Rosette menu features seasonal, inventive dishes using local ingredients and produce from their own kitchen garden. But this is still very much a pub at heart, so you’ll also find excellent sandwiches, proper Sunday roasts and a drinks list that encourages lingering. One for settling in, ordering again and yes, let’s just check in while we’re at it.</p>
