<p>If you don’t know the name&nbsp;<strong><a href="https://ysp.org.uk/whats-on/exhibitions/louise-lockhart-cake-crumbs-and-lemonade" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Louise Lockhart</a></strong>, you’ll definitely know the work. Those joyful, folk-tinged prints popping up on your M&amp;S food shop, on the chicest birthday cards, or on your kids’ seaside-themed threads? That’ll be her. Giant lemons, jaunty ice cream parlours, bustling markets – Lockhart has built a career celebrating the small, glorious rituals of British life (and yes, she does love an oversized citrus).</p>

<p>Now she’s stepping firmly out of the packaging aisle and into the gallery spotlight with her biggest solo show yet.&nbsp;<em>Cake Crumbs &amp; Lemonade</em>&nbsp;lands at <strong><a href="https://ysp.org.uk/whats-on/exhibitions/louise-lockhart-cake-crumbs-and-lemonade" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yorkshire Sculpture Park</a></strong>&nbsp;– a full-circle moment for the Hebden Bridge-born artist who grew up wandering its grounds. We sat down for a natter while Louise mid-install (well, mid-transporting-60-artworks-from-South-Wales).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ysp-is-a-bit-of-a-big-deal-how-does-it-feel">YSP is a bit of a big deal. How does it feel?</h2>



<p>Exhibiting at the YSP has been a longheld dream of mine and when the YSP approached me I was absolutely delighted. The Sculpture Park is somewhere I’ve been going all my life. My grandparents used to go in the Seventies and my parents who are both artists, took me and my brother there all the time for days out so it feels deeply personal. It’s great that the YSP is supporting Yorkshire artists.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-can-we-expect-from-the-show">What can we expect from the show?</h2>



<p>The show has totally consumed my brain for the last year and I’ll be glad when I get to see it all hanging on the gallery walls as for now it’s all just in pieces in my parents’ house in Hebden Bridge! I live in South Wales now and I’ve had to carefully transport 60 pieces up north for the show.</p>



<p>It’s the first time I’ve made art just for me – not for a packet or product. It’s exciting… and slightly exposing. Expect screen prints, paper collages and scenes of timeless British joy: parks, funfairs, seaside days, ice cream parlours (of course). My art has been described as nostalgic, but it’s actually about timeless activities and what families have enjoyed doing together forever that doesn’t define a time.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-have-you-got-a-favourite-piece">Have you got a favourite piece?</h2>

<p>There are some enormous screen prints which I really enjoyed doing of four giant fruit – a lemon, an orange, a tomato and a pear and I’ve also made some big screen prints about the vague themes of the show – parks, the seaside and gardening which I also really enjoyed doing.</p>



<p>I have had the chance to indulge myself for the show and use lots of old fashioned printing techniques – nothing you’ll see is digital. I have also created some works with cyanotype which uses the sun to create silhouettes. You get a different outcome each time with the old techniques which makes it very individual.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-title-cake-crumbs-amp-lemonade-where-s-it-from">The title <em>Cake Crumbs &amp; Lemonade</em> – where’s it from?</h2>



<p>I&#8217;ve stolen it a bit as there was a big, popular art exhibition in 1951 by the artist Barbara Jones called <em>Black Eyes &amp; Lemonade</em> all about advertising, and fairgrounds and painted canal boats. I wanted a nod to that and came up with a title that evokes what families would do on a day out.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-who-do-you-hope-will-come-to-your-exhibition">Who do you hope will come to your exhibition?</h2>



<p>People who don’t always go to galleries. No art-world nonsense. I want normal families to walk in and enjoy it. It’s colourful, affordable and an antidote to the relentless doom-scroll and all the depressing news that’s around at the moment. Hopefully lots of kids can come in the summer holidays.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-yorkshire-is-it">How Yorkshire is it?</h2>



<p>No flat caps, apparently. But look out for Yorkshire forced rhubarb crates and Yorkshire Tea. It’s Britain in general – but I’m Yorkshire through and through.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-you-grew-up-in-a-mill-full-of-artists-no-chance-of-accountancy-then">You grew up in a mill full of artists. No chance of accountancy then?</h2>



<p>Actually I think my mum hoped I would become something useful like an accountant but maths isn’t my strong point! My parents met doing bonkers street theatre in the Seventies, then Dad did exhibition design and my mum taught textiles. They bought a giant mill with some other artists nearby where they made lots of radical creations so there would always be a giant angel or a massive goose hanging around the family home, so yep, there was always mad stuff going on. My brother does animation so the whole family creates art.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-did-the-cut-paper-style-come-from">Where did the cut-paper style come from?</h2>

<p>After graduating from&nbsp;Glasgow School of Art, my now husband Paul and I moved to Vancouver for a year. I worked in a stationery shop which sold beautiful, printed paper and cards, and started making my own cut-paper designs. A blank page and pen can be terrifying. Scissors feel freer. I just start snipping. Instagram became my accidental agent. And the rest, as they say, is colourful history.</p>

<p>Designing Easter egg boxes for&nbsp;Marks &amp; Spencer, a circus-themed kids quilt and playtent for Anthropologie, and Mini Boden spotted a seaside collage of little houses and ferry boats I had made for my brother who lives on a cute Scottish island. They licensed the design and it ended up on dresses, shirts and swimming costumes. It’s surreal seeing my work on shelves when I’m doing the food shop.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-do-you-find-your-inspiration">Where do you find your inspiration?</h2>



<p>I think my artwork is a bit like the comedian Victoria Wood &#8211; she used to go to the post office, overhear funny conversations among the customers and turn them into a sketch and I do the same with my prints.&nbsp;I usually have the same themes that interest me such as food, ice cream and shop fronts and I get a lot of inspiration from old matchboxes or old packaging. I’m like a magpie.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-you-obviously-love-colour-do-you-long-for-neutrals">You obviously love colour, do you long for neutrals?</h2>



<p>I’m definitely allergic to beige and grey and no, there isn’t a single bit of black in my house or my exhibition, it’s all like a rainbow. I don’t try to make things colourful, it just comes naturally but I enjoy using bright colour and love vintage, retro colour palettes.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-who-are-your-artistic-heroes">Who are your artistic heroes?</h2>



<p>Yes Hockney was massive influence on me as he also went to Bradford Art College. I’d regularly go over to Bradford to see his artwork at Salts Mill gallery in Saltaire and at Cartwright Hall.&nbsp;&nbsp;I would study his paintings, especially his technique for drawing noses! Like me, his use of colour is instinctive. He and Matisse, who did paper cut-outs as well, are my two top muses.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-will-your-family-be-there-for-the-grand-opening-of-your-exhibition">Will your family be there for the grand opening of your exhibition?</h2>



<p>My mum has booked a coach for 53 people all coming from Hebden Bridge! All of my parents’ friends are artists who have influenced me so much while I was growing up so they have to come. That will be a laugh. </p>
